Steve Barnett is the Western Regional Manager for A2 Technologies with responsibilities for applications development and sales in the Western half of the United States. A2 Technologies, headquarterd in Danbury, CT, develops handheld FTIR systems for the materials characterization in a wide variety of fields, and for homeland security applications.
Steve earned his B.Sc., M.Sc., and Ph.D. degrees in Chemistry from McGill University in Montreal. Subsequently, he spent four years at the National Institutes of Health as a medical researcher, and has spent the past 15 years in government and industrial settings related to the application of optical methods in materials analysis.
FTIR has been well-known as a powerful chemical analysis laboratory tool in the petrochemical and pharmaceutical industries as well as a destructive materials analysis tool in the aerospace industry. The recent development of handheld FTIR systems has allowed for this technology to move into the field and onto the manufacturing floor for on-site analysis with a series of new applications not conceived of previously. Initial work has focused on the aerospace industry with recent movement into other fields where on-site analysis is critical. Developments to be discussed include surface cleanliness and preparation, coating thickness, thermal and UV damage in composites, and identification of contaminants.
